Surface Preparation

Ensure the walls are clean and free of dust, dirt, and grease. Wash the walls with mild soap and water, and allow them to dry completely. Patch any holes, cracks, or imperfections with spackle or joint compound. Sand the repaired areas for a smooth finish.

Choosing Paint

Select the appropriate type of paint for the surface (e.g., latex for drywall, oil-based for certain surfaces). Consider the finish (matte, satin, semi-gloss) based on the desired look and the room's function. Choose a color that complements the room's design and lighting. Test a small area or use paint swatches to confirm the color in the actual space.

Gathering Supplies

Purchase enough paint for the project, and consider whether a primer is needed. Some paints include primer properties. Use high-quality brushes and rollers for a smoother finish. Apply painter's tape to protect adjacent surfaces, edges, and trim. Cover floors and furniture to protect them from paint splatter.

Application

Start by cutting in along the edges and corners with a brush. This provides a clean line and makes it easier to fill in larger areas. Use a roller to apply paint to larger sections. Roll in a "W" or "M" pattern to distribute paint evenly. Maintain a consistent wet edge to avoid visible seams between sections.

Drying and Additional Coats

Allow each coat to dry completely before applying additional coats. Follow the paint manufacturer's recommended drying times.
In most cases, a second coat is necessary for full coverage and a more professional finish.

Clean-Up

Clean brushes, rollers, and other tools according to the paint type (water-based or oil-based).
Carefully remove painter's tape while the paint is still slightly damp to achieve clean lines.

Final Touches

Once the paint is fully dry, inspect the walls for any touch-ups needed.
Reinstall any removed fixtures, outlet covers, or switch plates.
